For family physicians, even a routine well-baby check-up can be a heart-warming experience. Not only do we hear about the infant’s progress and catch up on things at home, but we also savor the unguarded moments such as those I tried to capture in these sketches.

ALAN BLUM, MD, is professor and endowed chair in family medicine at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, where he founded and directs the Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society. A self-taught artist, he has had invited solo exhibitions at several universities, libraries, medical schools, and hospitals, and his work has appeared in numerous publications.
