Medieval medical practice

This image is from a twelfth-century manuscript showing various medical treatments such as a doctor describing medicines to his assistant, two doctors performing a head operation, and representations of patients with cautery marks. The artwork is actually a miniature, tucked in among the words of the manuscript, adding color to each page along with illustrations of herbs, medical treatments, and fantastical beasts.

Page from Medical and herbal collection, including Pseudo-Apuleius, Herbarius; Pseudo-Dioscorides, De herbis femininis: Sextus Placitus, De medicina ex animalibus. 12th century. Part of the Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts. Credit: The British Library. Public Domain.
