Hematoxylin and Eosin Abstraction

Lily Mahler
Birmingham, Alabama, United States

Hematoxylin and Eosin Abstraction is a watercolor piece inspired by the histopathology of a liver affected by hereditary hemochromatosis. Bands of deep blue iron deposits cut through a verdant garden of hepatocytes in this composition.

LILY MAHLER is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Alabama School of Medicine who plans to pursue a career in pathology. As an artist, she has a propensity for patterns and the primary focus of her work is abstract. The field of pathology allows her to explore the intersection of science and art—many of her pieces are inspired by cases that she has encountered during her education.
